PUPILS from Ayton and Reston primary schools were joined by Nurse Treat It Better and Dr Watson last week when ‘Body Builders’, a fast paced interactive show about the human body, visited Ayton school.

Supported by EDF Energy, the Body Builders show has been created by Generation Science, a touring programme of science shows and workshops for schools, delivered by the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Pupils were taken on a tour of how the main organs function within the human body. They also learned about the importance of healthy eating as a key to maintaining a well functioning body.

Louise Sanders, head teacher said: “We were delighted to have Generation Science at Ayton Primary this year. We hope that Body Builders will have proved to be an excellent way of helping the children understand how we can influence our health by paying attention to what we eat, and taking good care of our bodies.”

Paul Winkle, station director at Torness power added: “It is a great opportunity for us to get the message into schools that not only is science fun but that it can also be an exciting career. We are just looking at applications for our 2013 apprentice positions at Torness and maybe in the future some of those pupils will be applying to join us.”

Joan Davidson, Generation Science manager said: “Science is a practical subject and our team works hard to provide support to busy teachers and get pupils enthused by science. Our programme of interactive and hands-on activities is designed to help deliver the Curriculum for Excellence. We bring science to life, and by doing so hope that longer term more pupils will choose science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) in secondary education and as a future career.”
