20mph speed limit trial at Dunbar

A 20MPH speed limit is to be introduced at the Hallhill housing area of Dunbar in a trial by East Lothian Council.

The legal procedure necessary to make the Experimental Traffic Regulation Order will be carried out after the plan got the go ahead from the cabinet at a meeting last week. The experimental order will come into effect on April 1, 2013, for a period of 18 months. Speeds will be recorded before, during and after to establish the order’s effectiveness.

The council has been working with the development trust Sustaining Dunbar to promote walking, cycling and the ethos of a 20mph speed restriction.

Councillors stressed the need for community backing for the plan and this week Sustaining Dunbar, which carried out a survey of households in the area, reported that 70 per cent had given the proposal the thumbs-up.

A year ago the campaign was brought to the public eye through the efforts of Dunbar mum-of-three Morag Haddow, a member of Sustaining Dunbar, who was promoting 20mph speed limits in residential areas county-wide.

Now East Lothian councillors are set to keep a close eye on the Dunbar experiment to see if it could be implemented in other areas of East Lothian.
