There is a growing sense of urgency among Coldstream residents for a new burial space to be created in the town as there are only six vacant lairs left at Lennel Cemetery.

Coldstream and District Community Council has been seeking answers from Scottish Borders Council about what happens when there is no more space at Lennel.

Two plots were used in 2015-16 and five have been used in 2016-17, leaving six lairs.

Community council chairman Martin Brims said: “For some considerable time, the community council has been seeking reassurances from our ward councillors that Scottish Borders Council has a sustainable plan for burial space within our community, together with mitigation measures to address the ever-depleting space available at the current cemetery.

“We initially raised the issue a few years ago and were assured that the space earmarked in the local development plan was progressing and would provide the necessary space for decades.

“Our community will take some comfort from the council’s most recent statement.

“However, I’m sure that local residents will be keeping a very close watching brief to see how the options being explored unfold and will expect to be reassured about medium to long-term plans for burial space within our community.

“All concerned will recognise that this is a very emotive issue, and I sincerely hope our elected members and council officers will give the matter the urgent attention and resources it deserves. We look forward to learning about their future plans at the earliest opportunity.”

Land across the road from the existing cemetery is the preferred option and is in the latest local plan as such.

However, in October, money set aside for a new cemetery in Coldstream was withdrawn after councillors were told that the “protracted negotiations” about the site were unlikely to be settled within the financial year.

Mid Berwickshire councillor Donald Moffat is due to meet officials to discuss the issue next week, including other possible sites.

A council spokesperson said: “We continue to try to develop a new burial space in Coldstream. We are considering the use of other space within Lennel Cemetery, including footpaths, as well as offering people the choice of other council burial sites.”

“The date for when space within the cemetery runs out is dependent on demand for new lairs.”
