By far the largest number of members of Clan Home/Hume ever to congregate from all over the world are to visit the battlefield at Flodden.
They will end their visit to Berwickshire on Monday, September 9, by gathering on the site of the famous battle.
The Homes fought under the then Lord Home against the English 500 years ago on that same day. The Scots lost with disastrous consequences for the Scottish nation.
The Clan Home Association was founded at the beginning of this century when the present Earl of Home agreed to become its president. Since then “Gatherings” have been held every five years in Berwickshire and Annual General Meetings every year in varying locations.
The 2013 Gathering was always going to be special because it coincided with the 500th anniversary of the battle but even its organisers are amazed at the exceptional interest it has created.
The weekend for this ancient Borders family starts on Friday, September 6, at Wedderburn Castle hosted by David Home-Miller, and will be one of celebration, exploration, education, discovery and remembrance as well as bonding with members of the clan from all over the world. Over 100 members are flying in from Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Norway, Germany, and the USA not to mention from all over the British Isles.
A special interdenominational church service will be held in Duns led by Rev Ann Inglis and Father Adrian Convery followed by lunch as the guests of the Earl and Countess of Home at their home The Hirsel at Coldstream. They will continue on to Hume Castle for the raising of the Home standard, with pipers playing, and have a grand tour of the stately homes founded or owned by Homes and Humes down the centuries. Among these are Wedderburn Castle, The Hirsel, Mellerstain House, Marchmont House, Kames, Edrom House, Paxton House, Hume Castle.
“The decision to coincide this year’s Gathering with the 500th anniversary of te battle of Flodden has undoubtedly had a major influence in encouraging this increase in numbers,” says Gospatric Home, chairman of the Clan’s Organising committee.
