It’s the title that has been passed down throughout the generations and although it’s still six months away, Eyemouth already have their Herring Queen for this year’s festival.
Heather Smith has been awarded the prestigious title of ‘Eyemouth Herring Queen 2012’ and is now counting down to her big moment.
Even after all these years, the annual festival in Eyemouth is still held in high regard, and young women have to impress the judges with a glowing application to beat the many other hopefuls for the title.
And Heather certainly made a good impression.
“We are delighted to award Heather the title,” said committee member Wendy Lough.
“We think she will do an excellent job, and we know she and her maids are all very excited.”
Heather will be officially crowned on July 7, kicking off a whole week of fun and festivities. She will be presented with her crown by outgoing Herring Queen, Rachel Lauder, who will continue to enjoy her duties until the summer.
Heather will receive support from her maids who have also been chosen. They are: Alana Crowe, Kiera Robb, Rebecca Mark and Zoe Holmes.
Plans are underway to make the 2012 festival the biggest and best yet, and in particular for the crowning ceremony which attracts visitors from as far away as the USA, and is a time honoured tradition of the town.
The Herring Queen committee would like to invite boys and girls aged 4 (by April 1) -15 to take part in the ceremony, and ask that if they are eager to get involved to come along to a meeting at the Eyemouth Community Centre at 3.45pm on Monday, January 30.
