Work gathers pace on palliative care unit

Work on The Margaret Kerr Unit is progressing well and is causing quite a stir among patients, visitors and staff at the BGH.

The steel framework is now in place and the brick and block work substructure began to rise from the foundations last week, with the size and shape of the unit now apparent.

The casting of the concrete slab is due to take place next week, with roof works scheduled to start during the first week of June.

Meanwhile, the fundraising appeal is continuing well, with a number of events taking place across the Borders.

Last weekend the Trust was delighted to be collecting at Floors Castle Horse Trials and at the Borders Vintage Agricultural Association Rally, at which we were presented with a cheque for £2,303. The total in the ‘final million’ appeal pot now stands at an amazing £472,000 – tantalisingly close to the half way point of £500,000.

There are so many ways that you can make a contribution to the Margaret Kerr Unit Appeal; why not join thousands of people across the UK on Sunday June 3 and hold a ‘big lunch’ to celebrate the Jubilee weekend, raise funds for charity, and donate them to the appeal.

NHS Borders Project Manager, Susan Yates, is delighted with progress: “We are so encouraged to see the progress being made on the construction of The Margaret Kerr Unit, and the fundraising appeal that is supporting it. Despite torrential rain last week our contractors were able to keep working, and fundraisers were out in force at various events across the Borders, which demonstrates the dedication and enthusiasm that there is for the creation of this much needed facility”.
