BHA tenants still without repairs 
despite promise

The saga of the Berwickshire Housing Association’s windows continues as disgruntled tenants are still being left out in the cold.

Ian Gillies, 54, of Upper Burnmouth, claimed that new windows, fitted swiftly in one day last November by construction company James Swinton and Co, had left residents resorting to tape to keep the draught out.

He told the Berwickshire in December that he was left unable to open or close the new windows and that other residents had been left in a similar situation.

Now, Mr Gillies, who lives with his wife Sylvia and who has been a tenant of the housing association for more than 12 years, is still waiting for BHA to carry out full repairs to the windows after a botched attempt to do so in January.

He said: “BHA promised everything would be sorted after the Christmas holiday. This has not materialised.

“They did send a team from the manufacturers in Manchester, who, in early January, tweaked the windows.

“They added missing vents, fixed a broken lock and added new seals.

“Soon after this, we had to report rain and draughts blowing in windows when the wind direction changed.

“We had the installers out many times, the last being Wednesday, February 22, when it was discovered that the manufacturers had only added new seals on the verticals of the windows and none on the top or bottom, which was where the draughts were coming in.

“All through this fiasco of a job, we have paid full rent and had to turn up our heating to counteract the draughts.”

Colin Turner, the housing association’s corporate services manager told us: “This is one tenant who is dissatisfied and has approached us about this.

“We are currently dealing with them through our normal processes.”
