There was a big moment for a group of Gordon villagers on Saturday when they took to the stage to perform at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

The Funky Socks Choir took to the stage to perform a series of songs at the Acoustic Centre at St Bride’s as part of the programme for the annual hotbed of arts and culture.

Complete with eye catching socks to live up to their name, the choir, consisting of Helen Donald, Siobhan MacFarlane, Lesley Capstick, Jasmine Bowie, Rosie Holley, Eliana Capstick, Klara MacFarlane, Cara Neary, received a rapturous reception from their audience and arrived back in Berwickshire grinning from ear to ear.

The group, led by Mark Barnett, focussed their repertoire for their sell out concert on the songs of the late poet, songwriter and folk musician Sidney Carter and unbeknown to them they among those who watched their performance was a guy who had seen the man himself perform.

He was full of praise for Funky Socks , particularly the choir’s younger members who put their own spin on a Carter song by blending it with Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’.

Another women in the audience had sung some Carter compositions in London’s Trafalgar Square and was also quick to complement the choir on their interpretation of his music.

There were members of the audience who were more familiar to choir members with a number of residents making the trip to Edinburgh for the occasion, including minister Rev Tom Nicholson.

And member Lesley Capstick said to have such support was a massive boost, particularly as things nearly got off to a nightmare start.

“You get a half an hour gap between each act for equipment to be changed over and the act on before us managed to take Mark’s guitar, our key instrument by mistake.

“Fortunately we tracked one of them down to the cafeteria and get it back.

“That was a minor hiccup but the performance itself went really well and the lengthy applause we received at the end was amazing.”

Funky Socks are always keen to welcome new members.

Anyone interested in joining should go along to Gordon Village Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday, August 29.
