Burnmouth’s Gill Caine sets off next month on a 970 mile cycle ride from Dover to Cape Wrath, a year after cycling 996 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Such a fundraising effort would be impressive at the best of times but in this case it is quite extraordinary as Jill suffers from psoriatic arthritis and had two hip replacement operations in 2010.
Despite swearing never to do it again after completing the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride to mark her 50th birthday, within a week she had signed up for the Dover to Cape Wrath tour to raise money for Arthritis UK.
“As I have had such good medical care and rely on the continued development of the medicines which enable me to carry on as normal, it was a very simple choice for me to do this for Arthritis Research UK.
“By doing it as part of the Borders Challenge I feel I am giving something back for the brilliant care I get locally.”
The first Borders Challenge took place last year when the Melrose branch of Arthritis Research UK invited community groups, sports clubs and youth organisations across the Scottish Borders to “do something small to make a big difference and raised £3000 in a month..
