Gavinton, Fogo and Polwarth community council

New council

THE new and re-elected members of the communtiy council were declared as follows:

John Marjoribanks (Gavinton), Ellen Curran (Gavinton), Lorraine Tait (Gavinton), Jane Devine (Gavinton), Kerry Renton (Fogo) and Keith Dickinson

Office-bearers were elected as follows: Chairman - John Marjoribanks, vice-chairman - Kerry Renton, secretary - Janet O’Kane, treasurer - Peter Gibbens.

Cold calling

A PRESENTATION on the No Cold Caller scheme was given by Sergeant Jacqui McGuigan of Lothian and Borders Police.

There is a cost involved to the community so it is necessary to identify a need, eg on the grounds of vulnerability. Gavinton has a significant percentage of elderly residents so would qualify for the scheme if it was needed. It was agreed that Sergeant McGuigan or a colleague will attend the monthly Gavinton coffee morning on the last Saturday of November to explain the scheme to residents to find out if they wished to be part of it.

Footpath

PETER Gibbens has requested a detailed quotation for the work on the footpath to Fogo Bridge.

This comprises several parts: path, ditch, tree clearance and formation of gully at top.

A site meeting is to be held with the SBC access officer and following this an application will be made to the Blackhill Wind Farm fund and/or Landfill Communities Fund (via BCCF Environmental).

Roads

COUNCILLOR Renton has raised Gavinton’s request for the reinstatement of grit bins and road resurfacing of South Street to be put into next year’s budget.

Housing

A PUBLIC meeting has been held to discuss a proposed housing development on West Gavinton.

The chairman has written to the architects confirming the points made at the meeting. The architects are to be asked for clarification regarding the provision of affordable housing on this development. At the meeting, mention was made of social housing which is a different issue to affordable housing.

War Memorial

COUNCILLOR Renton is awaiting a response from the SBC officer involved regarding trees at the war memorial. The chairman suggested that instead of another tree, a flagpole could be put up to fly the flag when requested to mark events at the Kirk. It will be necessary to check out what permissions are needed, but members supported this idea.

Play equipment

ALTHOUGH the play equipment is checked regularly by SBC, Councillor Renton has requested an additional check.

Court

JANE Devine will report back at the next meeting regarding a response to the consultation about Courts in the Borders.

Next meeting

THE next meeting will be held in Gavinton Village Hall on December 3.
