Gary Miller, from Swinton, is running the Edinburgh Half Marathon on Sunday, May 31, to raise funds and awareness for New Horizons Borders (NHB), a user led mental health charity.

Gary said: “I am very excited as this will be my first ever half marathon event, at the age of 48, and I will be the only runner in the event representing NHB.

“I am proud and delighted to represent NHB as I feel this worthy organisation deserves and desperately needs increased support, funding and recognition for the exceptional service it provides in the Borders region.”

He describes how in early 2015 he was “suffering from severe chronic depression and alcoholism” to the point where he could barely leave the house.

“Fortunately, I managed to reach out for help and received incredible support from the NHS Borders East Team in Duns. My wonderful East Team Support Worker, Marion Smith, introduced me to New Horizons Borders, accompanying me to one of their drop-in centres, in Duns.”

He went on: “I was welcomed with open arms and made lots of amazing new friends who understood me and supported me through the process of my recovery.”
