Five dogs killed in caravan fire

A MAN and a woman were taken to hospital and five dogs died after a caravan caught fire in East Lothian in the early hours of Wednesday, October 19.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at Paxton Metals in East Fortune at 12.40am and found the large caravan well alight inside the scrap dealers’ yard.

A female occupant had managed to escape from the caravan and a man living nearby came to her aid, both suffered burns and cuts to their hands as they tried to rescue the dogs from the caravan.

The two people, who were also suffering from smoke inhalation, were taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Tragically, the five Border terrier dogs died in the blaze.

Fire crews from East Linton, Haddington and Newcraighall battled the blaze but the caravan was destroyed in the fire.

More than 20 firefighters attended the incident until 2.30am when firefighting operations ceased. Further personnel remained on site until just after 4am damping down hot spots.

A fire investigation is underway to establish the cause.
