Recruitment of retained fire and rescue personnel in Berwickshire has taken an upward turn.

At last week’s Berwickshire Area Forum, Duns Fire Station manager Matt Acton reported that they had received nine applications – two at Duns, three at Coldstream and four at Eyemouth. Three of the applicants were women.

Mr Acton told the area forum: “These applicants are at various stages in the recruitment process.

“Two candidates have progressed to a formal offer of employment and they start their initial training course in March.

“There are still vacancies, and anyone interested in joining is welcome to meet the local crews during their weekly training nights: Duns on Monday 7-9pm; Eyemouth 6.30-8.30pm; and Coldstream on Thursday, 7-9pm.

Anyone over the age of 18 years can apply. There is no upper age limit, but a certain level of fitness is required.

Recruitment into the service can now take place throughout the year.
