Almost a fifth of nurses in the Borders are due to retire in the next 10 years, according to the latest figures.
Statistics show that 263 out of 1,334 nurses working for NHS Borders are over the age of 55 and are expected to retire by 65, with many being eligible to do so now.
That 19.7% figure is worse than the national average of 18.2%. Across Scotland, 11,807 nurses are over 55 out of a total of 64,714, the figures show.
Adding to the future staffing issues faced by NHS Borders, 15 midwives out of 77 working for the trust are over 55 and are also expected to retire within the next decade.
South of Scotland Conservative list MSP Rachael Hamilton said: “If action is not taken now, this could cause serious pressures on the NHS in the Borders.
“It will be one of the areas hit hardest.”
