The 2016 Eyemouth Herring Queen, Megan Melvin arrived at Eyemouth harbour on Saturday on board the Eyemouth lifeboat to mark the start of Herring Queen Week.

Megan and her court were met at the quayside by the 2015 Herring Queen Roma Peakman and her maids and the two courts were escorted from the quayside by Eyemouth Pipe Band to Gunsgreen House where they got themselves ready for the crowning ceremony which took place on the main stage at the Home Arms car park.

The last act for 2015 Herring Queen Roma was to hand over the crown to Megan, and before doing do Roma said: “When people ask me what it’s been like to be Eyemouth Herring Queen I can’t actually put it into words, it’s been so good!

“Good luck Megan, savour every moment, you’ll love it.”

After master of ceremonies Douglas Stewart, chairman of the festival committee, drew the crowning ceremony to a close both the 2016 and 2015 courts were led along the High Street to the Eyemouth Disaster Memorial and then on the War Memorial where wreaths were laid.

Every day is a busy day during the Herring Queen Festival and it has been non-stop since the children’s procession and fisherman’s picnic kicked things off on Saturday. There’s still plenty more to come until the dramatic firework display over the harbour on Saturday night, and the week draws to a close with the Service of the Sea in the EU church at 6.30pm - a time of thanksgiving for “our fishing fleet and our festival”.

Festival committee chairman, Douglas Stewart said: “We are committed to ensuring the continuation of our festival traditions here in Eyemouth, where without all of your enthusiasm, attendance and contributions there would be no festival.”

This year for the first time the date for the 2017 Herring Queen Festival was announced, Douglas explaining that it shows their “passion for the festival’s future and our dedication to serve the people of our community”.
