Berwickshire Show lives up to reputation
Sheep judging at Duns Show
THE weather took a serious turn for the worse 24 hours later, but the rain stayed away and bright spells greeted exhibitors and spectators for the 127th annual Berwickshire County Show.
The grounds of Duns Castle were a hive of activity not long after dawn on Saturday as entries in the various classes arrived to compete.
One exhibitor who went home particularly happy at the end of the event was the 2012 Overall Show Champion F & I F Murray of East Horton, Wooler, who took home the day’s top honour with their Texel ewe.
It was a very successful day for the two-year-old, whose championship win in the sheep section represented its first interbreed victory.
In the Hunter classes it was a case of deja vu for Clive Storey and his horse Masquerade.
The overall champion from last year beat off some strong competition to once again lead the field and retain both the Championship Cup and the Manderston Bowl.
Clive, from Yetholm, said he was “hopeful but not confident” going into Saturday. However, he was thrilled that Masquerade managed to make it two out of two at Duns, having also been champion at Cumbernauld and third at the Royal Highland Show so far this year.
There was also success in hunting stock for Lorna Reid and her horse Bordergrove Hawaii from Whitrigs, Eccles which was awarded the Silver Perpetual Challenge Cup for Best in Berwickshire.
The Borders may have ruled the roost in the horses, but it was Northumberland owners who celebrating after the announcement of the overall champion in the cattle section.
Taking home the Lloyds Tractor Trophy were Renton & Redden Partners of Berwick with their impressive limousin Lodge Blush, which also won the Broadsmeadow Quaich for being the best in breed.
Anthony Renton said that having won the interbreed title a week earlier at the Border Union Show he was “always hopeful” the six year old limousin would taste success at Duns, but added “you just never know how it’s going to go. Different judges look for different things.”
Jedburgh’s A & K Gamble won the George Cormack Challenge Cup for the exhibitor gaining most points in the cattle section thanks to their simmentals, one of which was interbreed reserve champion the previous week’s Border Union Show.
Their nineteen-month-old simmental heifer Farnell Beth was awarded the NFU Mutual Cup and champion rosette for best in breed with Farnell Wish named reserve.
Always amongst the winners, Professor Penny of Bothwell Farm, Cranshaws tasted success again in the sheep section, showing the champions in both the greyfaced and blackfaced classes.
Berwickshire success also came in the poultry tent with the Poultry Cup going to Andy Anderson of Whitsome and his Rhode Island red.
Over in the industrial tent, Maureen Cranston continued her trend of taking home the top honours by once again lifting the Silver Rose Bowl for the individual with the most points.
Commenting on what was a very successful day, show secretary Natalie Cormack said: “The day was really tremendous, helped hugely by the weather and excellent turnout of both people and stock.
“As always, the quality of stock is really very, very good, and we appreciate just how much hard work goes into exhibiting stock.
“The show lived up to its reputation as a lively friendly gathering who were treated to a really brilliant day.”
