Extra train service offers Fringe benefits

Additional rail services to and from East Lothian will give commuters more opportunities to enjoy festive fun this month.

ScotRail has revealed its biggest Edinburgh Festivals timetable and the provision of extra carriages on existing services.

On Fridays and Saturdays from August 2-24, additional services to North Berwick will leave Edinburgh at 23.56, with buses to Dunbar connecting with trains at Drem.

And, from August 5-10, ScotRail will run a 23.59 North Berwick to Edinburgh service to help customers return from Fringe by the Sea events.

Customers will also benefit from extra carriages on existing services during August, although the train operator is stressing that trains will still be busy as thousands of festival-goers travel to and from the events.

Fringe by the Sea organiser John Shaw said: “We’re absolutely delighted that ScotRail has decided to put on this later train - it’s fantastic news. The latest train used to be 10.20pm and we have late-night shows still going at the harbour at that time. I’m hopeful of continued co-operation on rail services.”

Welcoming the additional services, East Lothian MSP Iain Gray said: “I am particularly pleased by the provision of a late connecting bus at Drem for residents in the Dunbar area. The late journeys back from North Berwick will hopefully encourage visitors to try events at Fringe by the Sea and see what East Lothian has to offer without worries about how they’ll get back to Edinburgh.”

ScotRail is urging festival-goers to buy tickets in advance.
