Exploring the history and wildlife of a Berwickshire
village by boat will become an option for locals and holiday makers later this year.
Popular visitor attraction Paxton House is getting ready to launch its latest venture offering boat trips along the River Tweed this summer.
The Paxton Trust has recently received funding from the Morton Trust to purchase two boats which will be based at Paxton House.
To begin with the boats will offer trips around the Paxton area, showing off the rich history, wildlife and countryside on offer. And the trust hopes to develop and extend the scheme in the future to include a shuttle service that will run between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Paxton House when tides allow.
David Seed, of Paxton House’s management agency Seed & Co , said: “This is a really exciting addition to the visitor offering at Paxton House.
“It adds another attraction to the estate and enables us to really show off the thing that makes Paxton House unique - its proximity to the river and the Border.”
He added: “We are very grateful to the Morton Trust for awarding us this grant, and enabling us to go ahead with our plans.”
The trips will begin this summer, with special launch events and press trips due to be held to spread the word.
The boats project is part of a bigger plan to develop Paxton House, and attract more visitors and locals to use the facilities.
This year the house opened with a completely refurbished and restocked gift shop, along with a newly decorated tea room that now has a retail section selling homemade jams, chutneys, meringues and cakes, as well as speciality Ringtons loose leaf teas and coffees.
A brand new grounds pass scheme was also launched, where for just £4 a year people can use the Paxton House grounds as often as they like.
This scheme has proved very popular with locals and people on holiday in the area so far, with almost 1000 sold since opening at the end of March.
Paxton House is open daily from 10am-5pm, until November 2. Details of tour times and upcoming events can be seen at www.paxtonhouse.co.uk
