Enrolment starts for primary schools

Borders schools are calling for any parents of children who were born between March 2007 and February 2008 to register their child for a primary school place for the 2012/13 session.

School enrolment for pupils starting P1 in August 2012 will take place between November 21 and November 25 and parents of any eligible children are invited to visit the headteacher of their local school during enrolment week.

Readiness for primary school varies and a child does not have to begin attendance at school until August after his or her fifth birthday. If a child’s fifth birthday comes between September 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013, the child does not have to begin school until August 2013.

Applications for early admission to primary school on behalf of children who do not fulfil the normal enrolment requirements should be made to school by January 6.

Director of education at Scottish Borders Council Glenn Rodger explained: “When you visit your catchment school to register your child, you will be asked to show a copy of your child’s birth certificate and provide proof of residence in the area.

“The headteacher will then give you details on start dates, uniform and a copy of the school’s handbook. It will also be a great opportunity for you to see the school, meet staff and ask any questions.”

Parents who intend to make a placing request to attend a primary school other than their local school are advised to visit their local catchment school to reserve a place during enrolment week and inform the headteacher that they will also be making a placing request. This will ensure a place is available at the child’s local school in the event the authority is unable to grant the placing request. In addition, parents wishing their child to be admitted to a school other than the catchment school are also requested to visit the headteacher of their preferred school by January 6.

Parents of a child who is to transfer from primary education to secondary education in August 2012 will be sent details of their local secondary school by the primary headteacher. Parents who wish to vary the normal arrangements and make a placing request are requested to contact the headteacher of the secondary school of their choice by January 6 and inform the headteacher of their primary school of this.
