Primary school pupils from across the south of Scotland have been competing to become Junior Young Writer of the year sponsored by Rotary District 1020.

The competition was won by Elena McHugh from Dunbar Primary School who received her prize at an award ceremony last week.

For the last few months, Elena has been a member of a P5 young writers group organised by teaching staff and Dunbar Rotary Club, supported by members of Dunbar WritersG, who have mentored the pupils in their creative writing skills.

Their theme for the competition was ‘Light Up your Community’.

Dunbar Rotary’s president, Thelma Band, with other club members and writers group mentors, attended a session with the junior writers at Dunbar Primary and announced Elena as the winnern. Thelma presented Elena with her winner’s certificate and thanked all participants, their teachers and mentors who had encouraged the pupils to improve their writing skills.
