The recruitment process to appoint a new headteacher for Hawick High School begins next week

Since August last year, Berwickshire High School’s head, John Clarke, has been seconded to Hawick as interim head and Scott Steele has been acting head at the Duns school.

Hawick High’s previous head, Kevin McClory, 43, was suspended by Scottish Borders Council last summer after complaints about his handling of staff isssues.

At the time, council chiefs put in place temporary arrangements to ensure Hawick High was managed effectively while a disciplinary procedure took place.

They also put out a statement saying: “Scott Steele will be acting headteacher of Berwickshire High School from August until October.”

October came and went, and Mr Steele still remains in charge at Berwickshire High.

Mr McClory resigned from Hawick High in December to take up what was described as an opportunity elsewhere.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said this week: “The recruitment process for a new head teacher for Hawick High School will begin next week, and we hope to make a permanent appointment made by the end of April, with a start date to be confirmed.”
