ALTHOUGH unfortunately the area couldn’t toast any individual award winners, there was some success for Berwickshire in the recent regional qualifiers of the Roberts Burns World Federation Schools Festival.
The number of competition spaces filled was at a record high this year with over 140 entries taken up across 19 primary schools and 25 spaces taken up by three secondary schools for the regional finals in Hawick.
And one group of youngsters who came away from the event extremely happy were the choir from Duns Primary School who will now represent the Borders at the national final at Armadale, West Lothian on May 12.
The big winner on the day was Robert Lowthian of Kirkhope who won three titles.
Robin Dodyk, Borders Association of Burns Clubs’ Schools Competition Convenor, said: “In total, we had 91 reciters, 50 solo singers, 28 instrumentalists (including pipers) plus one choir qualifying for the finals.
“Without a doubt the talent on show this year was the best ever.”
