Don’t be a target for thieves

MANY people will have received new mobile phones or ipods as Christmas presents and with this in mind Lothian and Borders Police have launched a new campaign against opportunist thieves.

Bars, nightclubs and hotels can provide rich pickings for these thieves, with handbags, cash, mobile phones, wallets and passports amongst the top targets.

To help people lower the risk of them becoming a potential target for criminals the police have distributed a pocket guide called ‘Thieves Heart Your Stuff’ across the Force area.

The tips to follow when you’re out and about include:

• Don’t leave your valuables unattended

• Keep handbags zipped up

• Don’t leave phones or ipods on tables

• Don’t leave valuables in jacket pockets

• Be aware of the people around you

• Use cloakrooms, lockers or handbag clips where provided.

The guide also includes a series of useful contacts including: Emergency Services - 999; Police (non-emergency) 0131 311 3131 and www.lbp.police.uk; Crimestoppers- 0800 555 111 and www.crimestoppers-uk.org; Traveline Scotland- 0871 200 2233 and www.travelinescotland.com.
