Council tax scam warning

Borders residents are being warned about a possible council tax scam.

A Peebles resident received an email, reputedly from HM Revenue and Customs, advising them that a council tax refund was due.

HM Revenue and Customs does not deal with council tax payments, so if you receive such an email, you are advised to disregard it.

Council tax refunds are dealt with by Scottish Borders Council customer services staff, so it is them that should be contacted about balances or refunds due.

Anyone who has received an email or call that they are concerned about should contact the council on 0300 100 1800.

Residents are advised to be extremely wary of unsolicited emails and phone calls and should not give out personal details or click on associated links.
