Plans to provide up to 200 homes for rent in the Borders through the National Housing Trust (NHT) have moved a step closer, with Scottish Borders Council agreeing to buy four new houses in Ayton.
The initiative is aimed at helping people rent quality properties at below market price. They would then potentially be able to buy it after a minimum period of five years.
Councillor Frances Renton, SBC’s Executive Member for Social Work said: “It’s an exciting time and I am delighted to see how much progress has been made as we move towards acquiring the first new homes from this Council-led initiative.
“These additional houses will provide the opportunity for people to make their home where they would like to live in Borders communities. None of us would disagree that our home plays a vital role in our health and wellbeing.”
