AFTER previously welcoming household names like John Bishop, Jason Manford and Julian Clary, the Berwick Advertiser can reveal that renowned funnyman Lee Evans is on his way to Berwick.

The award-winning comic, whose 2008 Big Tour saw him play to 500,000 people at 59 venues across the UK, is taking to the stage at The Maltings in May as a warm up to his Roadrunner Tour, which will take in the likes of Wembley Arena and Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena in the autumn.

Now established as one of Britain’s favourite comedy stars, the former boxer has captured audiences’ and critics’ imaginations with his irrepressible physicality and disarming charm. Winner of the Time Out Award for Comedy and the coveted Perrier Award, Evans has been described by critics as “a dazzling comic genius.”

Because he will be testing out some of his jokes on the Berwick audience on Tuesday, May 3 before kick-starting his tour for real, Evans may have to rely on some notes, but Maltings chief executive and artistic director Dr Miles Gregory is thrilled to have him performing at the venue and expects tickets, which go on general sale on Monday, to sell out fast.

He said: “We’re delighted that Lee Evans has chosen to perform at The Maltings. He is a major, major player on the international comedy scene, and one of Britain’s best-loved comedians. It’s great news for Northumberland, and it’s great news for The Maltings and Berwick.”
