A COLDSTREAM man is embarking on an epic 50-mile run next week to raise funds for a year abroad.

Edmund Blake will attempt to run from Edinburgh to Coldstream on the shortest day of the year, December 21.

“It’s not going to be fun or easy - but it would be crazy of me to ask for donations if the event was to be easy,” he said.

The 26-year-old is keen to raise money to help him get to Korea in February, where he has been offered a position teaching English to six to eight-year-olds.

The gruelling challenge has only been in the planning for a fortnight, and Edmund admits he doesn’t know quite what to expect.

“I’m doing this run on the shortest day of the year via main roads by myself in the dark,” he said. “I only came up with the idea about a week and a half ago so I’ve done very little training.

“Every now and again I go for a run but I don’t do a lot of long distance running. I’m not really unfit so just a few miles wasn’t something I wanted to do.

“I’ve never done anything like this before though, so I don’t really know how it will go. It really depends if it’s going to be icy as well, that makes it difficult, but I’m going to run and power walk as much of it as possible.”
