Chirnside man Billy Martin is celebrating 25 years of service as a coal delivery driver for Pearsons of Duns.
Billy started at the company in 1988 and has been delivering coal all over the Scottish Borders through rain, hail, sleet, ice and snow ever since.
It is at this time of the year, when demand starts to increase, that Billy comes into his own.
Billy explained: “A really challenging side of the job for me is that as the daylight gets shorter and the weather gets worse with the onset of winter, the busier I get.
“But the more demand increases, the more I enjoy it. Managing to get my lorry through deep snow, or carrying bags of coal up dark slippery paths to get to the bunker of an elderly person who’s depending on me has given me a lot of job satisfaction over the years.”
Managing director Monty Pearson said: “For nearly 100 years Pearsons of Duns has been a family business focused on serving the community with the highest possible levels of customer service.
“For 25 of those years Billy has been extremely reliable and valuable to the company, but more importantly, to his customers.
“Over that period of time I could count his sickness absence on two hands, he just doesn’t let his customers down. Myself and the team want to recognise and thank him for his hard work and dedication to Pearsons of Duns over the past 25 years.”
Billy received his 25-year service award and gift from Monty Pearson at a recent presentation.
Pearsons are the largest coal merchants in the Berwickshire, north Northumberland area, selling the widest variety of solid fuels.
They have expanded from their original role as local coal merchant into a modern multi-retail and trade outlet, with a builders’ merchant (for trade and DIY enthusiasts) and stove shop, garden centre and cafe serving light refreshments at their site at Station Road, Duns.
