A proposal to move Chirnside Post Office to new premises and extend its opening hours is going under public consultation.

The Post Office is proposing to create a modern, open-plan branch in the current Mitchell & Co. at Crosshill, 160 metres from its current position on Roseberry Terrace.

Customers and interested parties are now invited to submit their comments on the move in the period up to September 11.

The proposed change of premises would take place in November or December this year.

Should the move go ahead, the branch would open from 5am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 5am to 12 noon on Sunday. This would be 41 hours more than are currently offered.

The move is part of ‘Post Office local’, a scheme for delivering Post Office services with Post Office products and services available from an open-plan till at the retail counter that is open throughout shop opening hours, instead of from a screened counter.

It is part of major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed, the company says, to help customers do business through longer opening hours and modern environments.

Suzanne Richardson Post Office Regional Manager said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Chirnside and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”

During the public consultation, Post Office Ltd welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like considered before a final decision is taken on this proposal.

Submissions can be made during the consultation by sending your comments by Freepost to Post Office Ltd, via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, via the Customer Helpline on 08457 22 33 44 or through Textphone on 08457 22 33 55.

Meanwhile, Chirnside Post Office will help Duns Post Office customers while their own office is moved into Nairns on the Square.

The present Duns Post Office will close from 5.30pm on Monday, August 18. The new branch in Nairn News will then open from 1pm on Tuesday, August 19.

The new Duns Post Office will open from 5am-5.30pm Monday to Friday; 5am-7pm Saturday and 5am-1pm on Sunday, offering customers 84 hours and 30 minutes of Post Office service every week.
