The Better Business Forum in Berwick is today launching a competition for young entrepreneurs to win a business start-up package.

Open to anyone aged between 16 and 21 and backed by The Berwickshire News and Berwick Advertiser, the competition is being set up to inspire innovation and creativity in the south eastern Borders and north Northumberland.

The winner will be given a launchpad from which to start a business of their own by receiving support from established local firms.

He or she will receive a package which includes a minimum of £500 worth of free advertising in The Berwickshire News and Berwick Advertiser, as well as a free marketing consultation; £500 from facilities, property and energy management firm Mitie to be spent on advertising or a website; free accountancy advice and support from Greaves West & Ayre; free legal advice and support from solicitors Sanderson McCreath & Edney; and free membership of the Better Business Forum.

The winner’s progress will be followed in The Berwickshire News and Berwick Advertiser in a regular column.

John Moses, chairman of the Better Business Forum, said: “Giving a young entrepreneur support from local companies to launch a business idea shows what can be done by working together.”

Entries will be judged by a five-person panel and a shortlist agreed. Finalists will be asked to make a short presentation after which the panel will announce the winner at Berwick’s inaugural trade fair on Tuesday, May 13.

The panel is made up of Better Business Forum chairman John Moses; Berwickshire News and Berwick Advertiser editor Phil Johnson; Greaves, West & Ayre partner Hazel Smith; Sanderson McCreath and Edney assistant solicitor Mark Pentecost and Mitie’s Ben Jenkinson.

To enter, explain your idea in no more than 200 words and submit it along with your name, address, date of birth and a £10 entry fee (payable to Better Business Forum) to Better Business Forum, PO Box 115, Berwick TD15 2XA or the Berwick Advertiser office. The closing date is April 1.
