Events held in the Scottish Borders generate an economic impact of £8mn a year to the region.

A wide array of regional, national and international events of all sizes take place in the region each year, and Scottish Borders councillor Stuart Bell, its executive member for economic development, said: “These events raise the profile and enhance the reputation of the Scottish Borders and deliver a range of benefits for communities, as well as obviously bringing in visitors to the area and boosting our local economy.

“The importance of the Scottish Borders’ extensive events calendar cannot be underestimated, and both through funding and support from departments ranging from emergency planning to street cleansing and traffic management, the council will continue to support events where it can.”

An updated events plan 2014-2020 was presented to councillors at last week’s executive committee, proposing the targeting of events which have the greatest regional and national impact as this will enable financial support from EventScotland and other partners to be maximised.
