Whether its treating them to a shorter coat for summer or snipping away the hairs that get matted in spring puddles, dog owners are always checking their pets’ coats.

Now a new canine-centered business in Coldingham is taking some of the stress out of caring for man’s best friend.

Doggy Styles is a new dog grooming salon based in Coldingham’s School Road.

Owner Trudi Beatt says: “I offer a one-to-one service which is ideal for dogs who are nervous or that sometimes get aggressive around other dogs.”

Trudi is aware that - just like humans - dogs can get nervous and stressed when they’re undergoing a bit of grooming. But she says she has the skills and organisation to prevent any snapping.

“The beauty about only grooming one owners’ dog at a time is a grooming session should be a calm and relaxed affair.

“I don’t want dogs worrying about a dog they haven’t met yet looking at them from a cage. This can get dogs very stressed out and make the whole session very stressful.”

“I have always had dogs and have been working with them for the last three years. In August last year I decided to take the plunge and open a salon of my own. Now I’m up and running and fully insured and everything.

“We have designed a walk in shower unit for the dogs so I can groom any size, shape or age of dog.

”I own three dogs of my own, two westies and a golden labrador. My eldest westie is now 14 so I have experience in handling older animals.”

Trudi obviously has a bond with animals: she has a special plaque in the salon that reads: “Dogs welcome, people tolerated”.

“I would never force a dog to do anything (regardless of age) it really hated,” she says, explaining her technique. “I like to take things slowly so the dog and I can get to know each other. We have loads of breaks and go with whatever speed suits that particular dog.

“I love helping when an owner asks for advice, and if I don’t know I will do my best to find out.

“I am a member of several grooming forums with members who have been grooming forever, and what they don’t know about grooming isn’t worth knowing! It also helps me keep up with the most recent grooming techniques and to find the easiest ways to solve grooming problems.

“I have also completed a pet first aid course, including resuscitation and emergency mouth-to-mouth, down in Darlington.”
