New service to promote wellbeing in the region

One of Scotland’s most innovative independent psychology services will soon offer a range of bespoke services to support wellbeing in the Borders.

First Psychology Scotland already operates centres in Edinburgh and Glasgow but saw a demand from people living in the Borders area for contemporary professional services to support mental health difficulties and enhance wellbeing.

First Psychology Centre Borders, based in Galashiels, will be open to the public next month offering Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychotherapy, Couples/Relationships Therapy, Family Therapy, and Lifestyle, Wellbeing and Performance Development Coaching.

These services can be provided regardless of where the client lives, with telephone and online treatment available, which is particularly useful for individuals who may find that face-to-face treatment makes them more anxious. Clients include adults, young people/children, and couples.

Professor Ewan Gillon is Clinical Director of First Psychology Scotland, having developed the business from his own thriving practice in Edinburgh, and believes there is real demand in the Borders for this kind of expert psychological service.

“Some clients had to come from the Borders to our Edinburgh centre to seek our services and they told us that a Borders centre was important,” he says.

“As a result I’m expecting a positive uptake of our service – there are no waiting lists, and clients have immediate access to a team of highly qualified and experienced professionals expert in problems ranging from depression, self-harm, and anxiety to

eating disorders, anger management, and family and couple’s counselling. We also offer lifestyle, wellbeing and performance coaching to support those not in need of psychological therapy.”

Professor Gillon adds: “As an organisation, First Psychology Scotland has a strong commitment to the Borders area, basing its administration hub in Peebles. Almost all First Psychology Scotland practitioners in our Borders Centre are Borderers themselves, and continue to live locally. They understand and share the distinct values and culture inherent in Borders life.”

Each First Psychology Centre offers a professional and credible environment and at present the Edinburgh and Glasgow centres provide services for over 100 clients each week. The company has plans to open further centres in Aberdeen and Dundee, with the long-term aim of improving access to mental health, wellbeing and personal development services across Scotland.
