It’s a business that only opened its doors a year ago but Loaf B&B is tasting its first bit of awards excitement after being recognised by Vegfest.
VegfestUK are organisers of some of Europe’s biggest veggie and vegan festivals and have shortlisted the Horncliffe vegan B&B in the category of ‘Best Veggie Accomodation’, a category that only came into being at the last minute.
“I went onto the Vegfestwebsite to vote for one of my friends and it was only then that I noticed that there wasn’t actually an award for accommodation,” explained Karen Page who runs Loaf with her partner Mike.
“That was on June 10 and the deadline for nominees was June 30 so I put something onto Loaf’s Facebook page and it would appear that a number of our supporters lobbied Vegfest and the category was then created.
“I can’t say if it was all down to them but I think they certainly helped.”
Voting is now open and will close in September before the award ceremony itself which will take place in London.
Loaf is shortlisted along with nine other businesses so while not expecting to win, Karen is thrilled to be nominated and be able to put Berwick on the map.
““It’s great for us to be up for this award; it means a lot.
“There aren’t any vegan B&Bs in the north east, the closest ones to us are in Edinburgh and Cumbria so it’s nice to be recognised especially as most of the other businesses in our category have been going for years
“It’s also really good for Berwick; nowhere close to us has ever been nominated for one of these awards.
“Everyone that stays with us loves the place; many had no idea of the lovely beaches and other landmarks we have up here.”
The reviews in Loaf’s guest book and on Trip Advisor speak for themselves with one recent visitor proclaiming that “people would travel for miles around” for an experience like she and her daughter had at Loaf and one lady from Germany who has made numerous visits to the area just to stay there.
“We’ve had so much great feedback from our visitors and our supporters.
“And what’s particularly pleasing is that the positive comments haven’t just come from vegans; they’ve come from across the board.
“More and more people are looking for a healthier option and that’s what we strive to provide.”
