A Duns business has been rewarded for extending the palate of meat-eaters across the country with a top industry award.

Kezie Foods, based at Burnhouses Farm, won the Small processing business of the year award from the recent Meat Processing Awards.

The winner of this category was judged on their business development and community investment, as well as their environmental credentials and innovation, investment in people and sustainability of sourcing.

Kezie was put forward for the award and laid out what it has worked on to improve itself in these areas.

Kezie Foods strive to be the leading name in exotic meats in the UK, offering shoppers everything from frogs’ legs to bison burgers.

“I am bowled over with winning this award,” said owner Walter Murray.

“Over the past two years we have seen a real growth in exotic meats, with demand for something new for the dinner table.

“With help from the government’s push on eating healthier, Kezie have focused on the health benefits associated with eating meats such as kangaroo and ostrich - replacing the more traditional meats such as beef and pork and making the change to alternative meats that could significantly lower your fat intake.

“The award is a real achievement for us and with the added success of supplying Iceland this year, this could not have been possible without the amazing team I have. Here’s to continual success for us in 2015!”

Over the last 23 years the company has grown tremendously, in correlation with the growing demand in the UK for the interesting and the unusual.

Kezie is now the UK’s leading importer of exotic meats, and carries the largest selection available to consumers nationwide. As interest in exotic meats has grown, the company’s workforce and plant have had to expand. Thanks to a contract with a major high street retailer the company has invested in new machinery such as burger, sausage and meatball machines as well as horizontal thermoform fill-seal packaging machines.

Production staff numbers have increased from around 20 to 60. Due to these increases in personnel, Kezie has focused on local recruitment, staff training and employee engagement in the community, which was recognised with this award.
