THE Hirsel Estate at Coldstream is to host a ‘Wild Deer Best Practice Event’ on Thursday, October 11.
Organised by The Deer Initiative, Scottish Natural Heritage, The Hirsel Estate and The Forestry Commission, this will be a one day practical workshop for land/site managers and deer practitioners and will cover butchery, bullets, barrels and ballistics, woodland habitats and The Code of Practice on Deer Management (Scotland).
Alastair MacGugan, wildlife management manager, SNH, will speak on ‘Code of Practice on Deer Management’ while a ‘Practical Butchery Workshop’ will be given by master butcher Bruce Brymer.
Jamie Hammond, deer officer with SNH, and Jim Govan, senior forensic scientist (retired). will talk on ‘Bullets, Barrels and Ballistics’.
Finally Ron Rose, wildlife manager, Forestry Commision Scotland, will speak on ‘Woodland Habitat Impact Assessment and Cull Planning’.
The cost of the day is £30 per person which includes a light lunch (soup and a roll) and a copy of the Best Practice Guide.
Registration is at 7.30am with tea/coffee available and the event starts at 8am finishing at 4.45pm. Refreshments will be provided on the day.
