A Washington-based PGA professional has hailed the course at Eyemouth Golf Club “outstanding”.

Colin Gants, head professional at West Seattle Golf Club, said he had loved playing at Eyemouth.

In a letter to the club following a recent visit, Gants enthused: “I must tell you that over the last seven years we have played virtually every links golf course in Scotland that is on the water and I can honestly tell you that hole number six and seven are two of the best back to back links holes in the world.”

He added: “For how much attention the sixth hole receives, the seventh is even better. The strategic nature of the hole is outstanding. From selecting the best line off the tee to approach the sloping green and negotiating the deceptive speed and undulation on the putting surface keeps a golfer engaged from start to finish.”

Occupying a spectacular coastal setting, the cliff top links course at Eyemouth is one of the only courses which is open for a full round of golf virtually every day of the year.

Sitting on a rugged part of the Berwickshire coast, the course offers the discerning golfer remarkable challenges, including its sixth hole “A Still No Ken”, which has been named ‘Britain’s No1 Most Extraordinary Golf Hole’; and one of the longest par 5s in the UK “Hawkness Monster” (No13), which is 656 yards off the back tee. Winter membership until the end of March is just £100, and visitors can take advantage of a special Winter Warmer offer during the same period of 4 Ball plus a bacon roll and coffee for just £70 on weekdays and £80 at weekends.

But with its stunning views and quality food, the course isn’t the only thing to attract visitors to Eyemouth Golf Club.

It has a well stocked professional shop maintained by Club pro Michael Hackett, offering all the latest equipment and golfing attire, and the Clubhouse boasts one of the most spectacular views in the east of Scotland.

Perched high on Gunsgreen Hill, its panoramic windows command views in every direction from the rugged Berwickshire coast line to the picturesque fishing port of Eyemouth. Changes to the clubhouse over the past 12 months have provided a multi-functional facility that can cater for mixed events. It is not unusual to have a wedding in the Bayview restaurant (including the marriage ceremony) and a birthday party in the lounge whilst still being able to cater for golfers in the new ‘Snug’. The clubhouse is family friendly, catering for all ages and abilities with easy access and a lift to the function floor.

The renowned Bayview Restaurant on the upper floor of the Clubhouse provides breathtaking views, and proprietors George and Heather Aitchison pride themselves on making visitors and guests feel welcome, as well as enjoying their extensive menu which includes a wide variety of fish dishes ranging from locally caught scallops to tuna fish steaks. There is a large emphasis on fresh produce, all of which is cooked to order. Daily specials are also available.

As well as seafood, the restaurant provides traditional meat dishes including a two meat Sunday lunch. Open to members and non-members alike seven days a week, visitors are assured of excellent food, incomparable views, and a warm, friendly, Scottish welcome.

Bus trips are welcome by arrangement, and the club also caters for weddings, funerals and other formal and informal occasions. And if you’ve still to arrange your Christmas get-together, give the restaurant a call and see if you can book into one of the party nights. For more information go to www.eyemouthgolfclub.co.uk
