Zoe hoping hair salon will be a Home for style
THIS time last year The Home Arms in Eyemouth was an empty building which had seen better days but now thanks to the hard work of Lincolnshire couple Zoe Shepherdson and Gary Steemvorden it has been transformed into a popular guest house and can now also boast its own hair salon.
Zoe and Gary first moved to Eyemouth early last year and after months of toing and froing from their home down south and working flat out to breath new life into the former pub which was built in 1886, they opened it as a hotel in August, marketing it as accommodation for keen divers.
Business has been brisk since then and now trained hair stylist Zoe is indulging her other major passion by opening The Hair Bar, which opened its doors for the first time at the weekend.
Like with the guest accommodation, the salon is almost unrecognisable from the old bar it once was with high end fixtures and fittings meaning it resembles a salon that wouldn’t look out of place in a bustling city centre.
Zoe knew right from the start of her and Gary’s Home Arms venture that she wanted to include a hairdressers, and buoyed by the success of the hotel side of things was excited about welcoming custom.
“I can’t believe the opening is finally here,” she commented days before inviting her first customers in.
“I’ve got a lot of experience in the hair industry, managing two salons and being a self-employed stylist for seven years so I’m looking forward to getting back into it.
“I knew from the outset that I wanted the salon to be young, fresh and funky and to also aim it at the gents market too.
“One of my friends came to have a look around the other day and she said she didn’t feel like she was in Eyemouth; she said it was like stepping into a salon in Edinburgh.
“Like with the hotel; it’s taken a lot of work to get where we are now. I’d originally thought about having it open in time for Christmas but it seems right to be opening up in the new year.”
At the moment Zoe is the only stylist based at The Hair Bar but she is keen to rent a chair to a local hairdresser and offer training to anyone looking to forge a career in the hair industry.
Zoe is joined in the salon by Eyemouth nail technician Lucy Ruthven who is looking forward to adding a bit of sparkle to local hands.
“This past year nail art has definitely gone up a notch,” she commented.
“There are no boundaries with it; people are getting everything from glitter to 3D nail art.
“I do acrylic nails but I’m focusing of shillac.”
Having been blown away by the level of trade garnered by the hotel, Zoe is hoping the salon will also establish itself as a popular calling point.
“Business has been absolutely phenomenal since we opened last summer,” she commented.
“We’ve been pretty much fully booked over autumn and winter and have been full since New Year’s Eve - I’ve never ironed so much in my life.
“Bookings for this year are already coming thick and fast; things have been a lot busier than I ever thought there would be.
“I still want to cook breakfast for our guests every morning even though I’ve got the salon to run as well.
“I think its important to have that interaction with your customers.”
