EDF Energy’s search for new Torness apprentices begins

EDF Energy’s Torness power station has started its search for the latest batch of new apprentices.

The apprenticeship scheme will see youngsters taken on at each of EDF Energy’s sites across the UK.

Once selected, 51 apprentices from across EDF Energy’s eight nuclear power station sites will join the four-year scheme, which for the first two years takes place at HMS Sultan – a world-class training centre in Portsmouth. The apprentices return for on-site training at their local power station for the final two years.

For the 2012 intake, Torness received more than 300 applications and after tests and interview, seven were selected. The successful applicants came from a number of local schools and colleges.

Although Torness does have some female apprentices already, 2012 is the first year that the station was able to welcome two females among the new recruits.

Dominic Blythe, Torness’ apprentice training co-ordinator, said: “Our apprenticeship scheme is well recognised for providing high quality training and support to develop the confidence and skills of our new recruits. As always we are looking for applications from a diverse range of people.”

Away from the classroom the apprentices will enjoy excellent sports and leisure facilities under the watchful eye of the centre’s own team.

They will also undertake an extensive life skills package along with some cultural visits to European cities.

Applications opened on November 1 and further information and application forms can be found at www.edfenergy.com/apprentices
