Burns Club pull off coup

WHITEADDER Burns Club has pulled off a coup by inviting the president of the Robert Burns World Federation to give the Immortal Memory as the members hold their 60th birthday supper next year.

Secretary John Gardiner confirmed at a recent committee meeting that Jim Shields, a renowned speaker, was looking forward to the event, to be held in The Robin’s Nest at Chirnside on Monday, February 6.

Jim Sewell from Shilbottle will give the toast ‘to the lassies’ and it is hoped the oldest member, Walter Robertson of Allanton, will give the toast to the club. New chairman, Peter Walker, of Eyemouth, will preside.

The Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire, Major Alexander Trotter has been invited as a special guest and he will be asked to propose the loyal toast. Ian Buick is to recite a poem written by Burns about John Lapraik. It is the first time this poem will be heard at the Whiteadder club.
