A BURNMOUTH fisherman has lodged an appeal against his sentence for fishing offences off the Northumberland coast.
John Affleck pleaded guilty to two offences at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on January 6 and was given fines totalling £10,000. The appeal will be heard at Newcastle Crown Court.
A Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NIFCA) patrol vessel lifted Mr Affleck’s pots from off Holy Island on August 2 last year during routine inspections. Officers found edible crab bait in the pots and also that a number of pots did not have NIFCA-issued tags attached to them, which breached fishing byelaws.
