Borders MSP John Lamont has praised the contribution to the region by Hawick High School’s Saturday Polish class.

He visited the school last weekend to speak to parents and teachers and attend an awards ceremony held as part of its end-of-year celebrations.

The Saturday School, run in affiliation with charity Mohr Language Support, opened in April 2013 and offers a range of subjects including English as an additional language and Polish as a modern foreign language.

Mr Lamont, a Conservative, said: “It was fantastic to visit Hawick High’s Saturday Polish school for its end-of-year celebrations to hear about what the school has been offering over the last academic year.

“We are really lucky in the Borders to have a Polish community which is so involved in the local area.

“The school offers a range of classes for Polish-speaking Borderers, particularly children who are finding the language barrier challenging.

“I was interested to learn they also offer qualifications in Polish and Polish literacy and history.

“It is more important than ever to recognise the valuable contribution our Polish communities make to the Borders and elsewhere in the UK.”
