The Home Arms guesthouse in Eyemouth has been recognised as one of the best places to stay in the Borders.

Hotel search website trivago.co.uk this week revealed the results of their inaugural Top Hotel Awards, using aggregated online user ratings in order to recognise the best-rated hotels.

The awards, which are based on an index of over 190 million ratings across 30 websites, placed the Home Arms third in the Borders region.

The guesthouse is owned by Gary and Zoe Steenvoorden, originally from Lincolnshire, who got hooked on the area around St Abbs and Eyemouth after visiting on a diving holiday.

Their first aim of buying a holiday home grew into a dream of living and working on the Berwickshire coast. After a lot of searching for a suitable property to run as their own accommodation, The Home Arms, a former pub with letting rooms, came on the market. The old Home Arms derelict, and Zoe recalled: “It was in quite a state, and it took quite a bit of work.”

Recently, the venture has diversified, with hairdresser Zoe opening a unisex hair bar.

“This recognition has been fantastic,” said Zoe. “We get probably 95% of our bookings from these websites, so it’s been great.

“Things have really blown up since that first year, and in fact this season has been our busiest yet!”
