Armed police on Border streets not appropriate

Armed police on routine patrols in parts of Scotland has raised concerns and Councillor Vicky Davidson is asking Scottish Borders Council to take a stand.

At today’s meeting of SBC she will say: “We do not believe that the introduction of Armed Response Units in which police officers routinely carry side arms, rather than having them stored in secure cabinets in their vehicles for use when needed, is appropriate or desirable for the Borders.

“We call on the HM Inspectorate for Constabulary in Scotland and the Scottish Police Authority to ensure that the routine deployment of armed officers does not become the norm in Border towns. We urge them to recommend to Police Scotland that the routine deployment of armed officers is ceased forthwith and is not re-continued without full consultation in each council area.”
