Writing’s on the wall

Berwick’s 18th century jailhouse featured on the Tyne Tees programme Grundy’s Wonders this week in 2004.

Host John Grundy explored the graffiti left by residents of the jail which can still be seen.

There are not just names and dates, but also fairly detailed drawings on the walls, many of which have a nautical theme reflecting the town’s maritime past.

Also featured in the programme were inscriptions under the 700-year-old abbey in Hexham and an indecipherable etching over a farmhouse doorway in Kielder.
