The Berwickshire News’ Naval Correspondent performed a public service in October 1914 when the paper published a guide to enemy aircraft (reproduced above).

“In this war,” they wrote, “the Germans are staking a great deal on the use of their Zeppelin airships which they hope when the time comes will come out at the head of their fleet and put an end to ours.” The general design of the Zeppelin was patented by their inventor, General Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who made reconnaissance missions in hot air balloons while serving in the volunteer German Corps during the American Civil War.
