‘Trickie’ Dickie’s speedy start

1989 was a bumper year for ‘Tricky’ Dickie Wilson from Wooler, seen here with the trophies he accrued in just 16 months after taking up go-karting.

Dickie, aged just 10 at the time, brought home 23 trophies in that time, with pride of place going to the silver cup he won in the Border Championship. And for the Wilsons, karting was a family sport: Dickie’s father Gordon had 10 years karting experience, and the whole family enjoyed attending meetings.

“I like going fast,” said Dickie at the time, “but I like passing other drivers the best.”
