Sunday, March 3 sees the return of folk-singer and harmonica wizard and member of the Glastonbury Festival alumini, Jez Hellard to Berwick to play a show with his band at The Barrels Ale House.

He and Canadian songwriter Scott Cook received a warm welcome back in September when they played at the Barrels as part of Scott’s ‘Moonlit Rambles’ UK tour.

The character-filled pub, perched on the north bank of the Tweed appealed to both singers, and keen to get back to a place that impressed him so much, Jez is bringing his band back to play a show as part of their spring tour, promoting their new album, .Blood & Honey, recorded between England, Canada and Macedonia.

Jez Hellard & The Djukella Orchestra play traditional and contemporary folk music, from jigs and reels to tango, rhumba, funk and reggae.

A singer of potent songs, stunning harmonica player, guitarist and producer, since 2005 Jez has played over 600 gigs; from Vancouver to Istanbul, New York to Taipei, from Glastonbury to theatres, pubs, clubs, and street corners around the world.

Touring extensively in the UK, Canada, East Asia and the Balkans, he performs solo, as a duo with Canadian/Hungarian violinist, Zoe Moffat and with the The Djukella Orchestra, fiendish fiddlers Julie Rands-Allen and Alastair Caplin, the formidable double-bassist, Nye Parsons, and renowned Macedonian Accordionist, Jordan Kostov, amongst other talented players.

He also plays with with the sublime Nahan Ball, cowboy-jazz renegades, The 32-20s, anarchist folksters, Firepit Collective, the righteous reggae of Avalon Roots, the folk-hop of political pop-star Billy Rowan (The Undercover Hippy), and a host of other acts.

As a freelance harmonica player, he plays with a variety of acts from reggae to bluegrass, celtic to jazz, and is always happy to broaden the repertoire.

Jez & The Djukella Orchestra’s gig at The Barrels begins at 7pm.
