This week’s photograph from the Berwickshire News archive shows the only crew not to lose members in the Eyemouth Fishing Disaster of 1881.

The seven men were the crew of the Ariel Gazelle, which made it back to port after being at sea for 45 hours.

On October 14, 1881, the Eyemouth fishing fleet salied out of the harbour despite barometer warnings of bad weather approaching. On what became known as Black Friday, 129
Berwickshire fishermen lost their lives.
