t Scottish Borders Council is to object to the proposed changes to the A1 junction with the A6105 Duns road after Berwickshire councillors expressed reservations about the scheme. Foulden, Mordington and Lamberton Community chairman John Williams called on the council to support residents’ wishes for the junction to be kept open so they don’t have to travel the extra mile or so to get into Berwick.

t HUNDREDS of Berwickshire farmers, hunters and supporters travelled to London on Sunday to voice their anger at the government’s handling of countryside issues. They were among a 400,000 strong crowd at the at the Liberty and Livelihood March which took over the capital.

t Eyemouth Community Council has agreed to alert the police and licensees about the “disturbing problem of underage drinking in the town.” At a community council meeting on Monday night, both councillors and the proprietors of the cinema, strongly objected to allegations that the problems were stemming from their business.

t Scottish Industry Minister Ian Lang MP was told by energy chiefs on Tuesday that nuclear power could be switched on at Torness power station in time for Christmas.

t THe Secretary of State for Scotland, the Hon. Michael Noble has written to Sir William Anstruther-Gray MP, regarding Berwickshire County Council’s request for more trunk road work. At a meeting of the roads committee held at Duns last week, it was agreed to continue pressing the Scottish Home Department on the matter.

t THE Duns branch factory of Ballantyne sportswear Co. Ltd is to close on October 12. This will mean that in total 16 women will be out of work in the county town.

100 years ago

t WHILE “leading in” at Ninewells on Monday, James Robertson had a rather bad accident. It appeared he was loading a cart in the vicinity of Ninewells Bakery when the horse bolted and made for the gateway, catching the fence and throwing Mr Robertson to the ground. He was taken to a dcotor and found to have a fractured forearm, severe cut to the head and a bruised shoulder.
